Tips on writing a successful heritage grant application

Tips on writing a successful heritage grant application

Heritage grants can provide much-needed funding for a wide range of projects, from the restoration of historic buildings to the development of educational programs about heritage. However, the competition for heritage grants is often fierce, so it is important to write a strong application.

Here are some tips on how to write a successful heritage grant application:

  • Choose the right grant. There are many different heritage grants available, each with its own criteria and requirements. It is important to choose a grant that is well-suited to your project.
  • Read the application guidelines carefully. Once you have chosen a grant, read the application guidelines carefully. Make sure you understand all of the requirements and deadlines.
  • Write a strong project description. The project description is the heart of your grant application. It should clearly explain what you plan to do with the grant money and why your project is important. Be sure to highlight the benefits of your project for the community and for heritage in general.
  • Provide a realistic budget. The budget should be realistic and detailed. Be sure to explain how you will spend the grant money.
  • Get letters of support. Letters of support from other organizations or individuals can help to strengthen your grant application. Be sure to ask for letters from people who are familiar with your work and who support your project.
  • Proofread your application carefully. Before you submit your application, proofread it carefully for any errors in grammar or spelling. You should also ask someone else to proofread it for you.

Here are some additional tips:

Be specific. When describing your project, be as specific as possible. Avoid using vague language or jargon.

Be realistic. Don't overpromise what you can deliver. Make sure your project is achievable within the budget and timeframe you have proposed.

Be clear and concise. Avoid using unnecessary words and phrases. Get to the point quickly and efficiently.

Be passionate! Let the grant reviewers know that you are passionate about your project and that you are committed to making it a success.

There are quite a number of sources for heritage funding, The Heritage Funding Directory is a website which compiles many of these sources. Managed by The Heritage Alliance and the Architectural Heritage Fund, it also serves as a free guide to financial support for anyone looking for investment in a heritage-related project within the UK.
