The Heritage at Risk Register: A snapshot of England's heritage in danger

The Heritage at Risk Register is an annual list of historic buildings and sites in England that are considered to be at risk of loss or serious damage through neglect, decay or inappropriate development. The Register is published by Historic England, the government's public body for protecting, promoting and enjoying the historic environment.


The Heritage at Risk Register includes a wide range of historic assets, including listed buildings, conservation areas, scheduled monuments, registered parks and gardens, historic battlefields and wrecks. Sites are added to the Register following an assessment by Historic England and local authorities. The assessment takes into account the condition of the asset, the level of risk it is facing and the actions that are being taken to address the risk.

The main threats to heritage assets at risk include neglect and decay, inappropriate development, climate change and conflict. Historic England and local authorities are working together to save heritage assets at risk.
