Level 1 Historic Building Recording
Historic Building Recording to support planning application

We were instructed to carry out a Level 1 Historic Building Recording to support a planning application. The council made this a requirement before they could make their decision, and our quick turnaround meant that the client’s application was not held up unnecessarily.
A Level 1 recording is the most straight forward type of historic building survey. It typically includes:
A photographic record of the building, predominantly external.
A written description of the materials, layout, and overall condition.
A short summary of the building’s development and any notable architectural features.
While less detailed than higher-level surveys, a Level 1 recording is an essential planning tool. It ensures that a permanent record exists before any alterations are made, striking a balance between allowing development to move forward and safeguarding the historic environment.
For our client, this meant meeting the council’s requirements quickly, with a clear, compliant document that demonstrated respect for the site’s heritage whilst enabling their project to continue without delay.
This project highlights the value of getting heritage advice early in the planning process. By knowing exactly what is required, and delivering it promptly, we help applicants keep projects on track and ensure the historic record of the building is preserved for future generations.
