Desk-Based Assessments
Early-stage archaeological and historical insight to inform development

Desk-Based Assessments (DBAs) are typically undertaken at an early stage of the planning process to establish the archaeological and historical context of a site and assess the potential for heritage impacts.
Aurora Heritage prepares DBAs that provide a clear, structured overview of known heritage assets, past land use and archaeological potential. These assessments help inform whether further investigation is likely to be required and support proportionate decision-making before significant time or cost is committed.
Our DBAs draw on a wide range of sources, including historic maps, documentary records, archive material and relevant heritage databases. Where appropriate, we also provide mitigation strategies to address potential impacts identified through the assessment.
By providing clarity early on, Desk-Based Assessments can help reduce uncertainty, avoid unnecessary work and support smoother progression through the planning process.
